“The Oscar for Integration”, proclaimed Deutsche Welle. On May 23rd at the German Foreign Ministry, two sisters; Tugba Tekkal, SCORING GIRLS Project Lead and Düzen Tekkal, HAWAR Chairwoman, sat on the edge of their seats as the jury announced their decision that HAWAR had been selected to receive the CIVIS Medienpreis in the category CIVIS SPECIAL: Football and Integration >Digital< for their SCORING GIRLS project video!
SCORING GIRLS is the brainchild of HAWAR project manager and former German Bundesliga player, Tugba Tekkal. Each week, rain or shine, Tugba laces up her football cleats weekly with 25 girls between the ages of 12 and 20 from 8 countries. What may look like a regular football training to the passerby, is in fact a testament to the educational and integrative power of sport. Young Yazidi, Muslim and Christian girls playing together and forming friendships in a free country.
Since the project’s launch over two years ago, SCORING GIRLS has become much more than just a football team. The growing project supports young women in school by offering extra homework help and assists the girls and their families throughout their resettlement process.
