#TEAMHAWAR: MEET SARAH

#TEAMHAWAR: MEET SARAH

Over the next year, we’ll be introducing one member of the #HAWAR team each month. Currently, there are 12 of us – and, until now, we are made up solely of GIRLS! This October meet Sarah.

What do you do @ HAWAR?

I am a bit of a jack of all trades at HAWAR, with my official title being Head of Projects. On a daily basis you can find me checking in with our project managers, conceptualizing our next exciting project, or going over project finances.

What does HAWAR mean to you?

To me, HAWAR stands for hope and a world where values of equality and peace are central. At a time when division and hatred all too often dominate news headlines, it is a proud feeling to be able to contribute to a positive, value-based vision of the world on a daily basis.

Our projects provide opportunities to those on the margins of society who are often forgotten by traditional programs. Ensuring that women and girls have the opportunity to reach for their goals and have a seat at the table – whether that is in making decisions for their family, at work, or at the highest levels of government – keeps me moving.

What did you do before joining HAWAR?

My work in the non-profit field began in 2015 after completing a Master of Public Policy from the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin and a bachelor’s in economics and political science. Over the last five-years, I have worked as a grant writer for numerous non-profit organizations in Berlin. I am originally from Oakland, California and a lover of all things outdoors. I spent most of my childhood playing basketball and was voted a top-50 player in the state of California when I was 18!

What is your favorite HAWAR moment?

My favorite HAWAR moment was when I visited HAWAR’s the BACK TO LIFE Women’s Empowerment Center for the first time in March 2018. Seeing a project that I helped develop come to life was one of the most humbling experiences of my life. Walking into the building plastered with HAWAR logos, meeting our amazing teachers, and seeing 30 of our students practicing their right to self-determination was truly moving.

If you could describe HAWAR in three words, what would they be?

I would use hashtags, because I’d want to use more than 3 words 🙂
